Gold Institute Conversation: Erbil, Iran and the future of Kurdistan
The Gold Institute for International Strategy hosted a conversation between Senior Fellow Nahro Zagros, PhD., and Media Fellow Neil W. McCabe, a veteran of the Iraq War, about Zagros’ Iraqi Kurdistan homeland, and its relationship with the rest of Iraq and Iran. Nahro, who is based in Erbil, where he is the vice president of Soran University, Iraqi Kurdistan’s top institution of higher learning, told McCabe that there are many solutions for the Iraqi Kurds, but none of the solutions are workable in reality.
The academic, whose research interests include Middle Eastern politics, cultural anthropology, terrorism and counter-terrorism, said in the past 20 years, the Iraqi Kurds have been let down by the United States, but in the main, the United States has been a good partner. Iraqi Kurdistan remains one of the most intensely pro-American areas of the Middle East, if not the world, and this partnership was why the Kurds were successful in beating back the so-called Caliphate of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, or ISIS.

Is strategy the only thing missing from the Biden foreign policy?
Adam Lovinger, the vice president for strategic affairs at the Washington-based Gold Institute for International Strategies, joined Neil W. McCabe, a Gold Institute media fellow, for a Gold Institute Conversation.
Lovinger, who for many years worked on strategy at the Pentagon, including his final posting at the Defense Department’s close-hold Office of Net Assessment, told McCabe that strategy is the middle of the process, because first, a country, an institution, or even a company, needs to first take an inventory of what they have and compare it to what they want. Then, the process of developing a strategy begins.

Western Foreign Policy in the Absence of the U.S.
In this small, dangerous world, there should of course be close cooperation in all policy areas between the U.K. and their continental neighbors. But it is paramount for all who seek to protect our freedom, prosperity, and way of life to revitalize the transatlantic alliance (Iain Martin, “The end of Pax Americana leaves us all in the cold”, Comment, Sep 2) in a reliable and meaningful way. Trust is at the heart of all friendships.

Gold Institute Insights with Neil W. McCabe: A look at the 25th Amendment
It appears increasingly unlikely that President Joe Biden can finish this year, let alone his term, in the Oval Office. One need not be a physician to see the substantial cognitive decline that’s occurred even since Biden was a candidate. Sooner or later, Biden may either be persuaded to voluntarily resign or face a first-ever formal challenge to a president’s continuance in office, per the 25th Amendment. Watch as Gold Institute for International Strategy’s Media Fellow Neil W. McCabe hosts Senior Fellow John Wohlstetter for an in-depth discussion regarding historical precedents on presidential disability and how the American presidency has been affected by ill health many times before.
A Review of the (D)Evolving of Law Enforcement Today
The Gold Institute for International Strategy’s senior law enforcement fellows have been troubled with the state of our police departments throughout our country. Additionally, the lack of common-sense judicial policies in our penal law system is hurting our communities. In a recent press conference, DC Metropolitan Police Chief Robert Contee that took place on July 23, 2021, he expressed his frustration of a failed penal law judicial system that has made policing and our communities unsafe. At the same time, rewarding the criminal for being a criminal with no consequences of committing violent and repetitive illegal acts on law abiding citizens and businesses has produced a state of anarchy in some of our communities.
Listen as Gold Institute senior law enforcement fellows review the (D)Evolution of Law Enforcement Today. Participating are Gold Institute Senior Fellows, Det. TURKEY: Repairing the relationship with the West
For over eight decades from the foundation of the Turkish Republic in 1923, the Turkish leadership oriented its policies to the West. With frontiers to the Soviet Union, it became one of the earliest members of NATO in 1952. But its long-standing aspiration to join the European Union has been rebuffed, its efforts to protect Turkish citizens of Cyprus have been falsely described, it has suffered decades of terrorism and has given refuge to millions of Syrians fleeing conflict. Now President Erdogan’s dealings with Russia, his seemingly Islamist agenda and sympathy for the Muslim Brotherhood, his Kurdish policy, and his heavy-handed treatment of political opponents have created an abrasive relationship and tensions with Western friends and erstwhile allies in the Middle East including Israel, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the UAE. As the democracies become more conscious of the struggles ahead and the need for solidarity and strong allies in an increasingly dangerous world, Turkey should be firmly back on board. What needs to be done?

The State of Law Enforcement in the U.S.
In recent years and increasingly during the past year the apparent relationship between law enforcement and many localities across the country have become strained with increased calls to defund the police. Iran and Their Proxies: The Current Situation
Throughout the 2020 the topic of future relations with Iran was at the forefront of discussion. The Trump administration planned to continue their hard stance against the regime, while then candidate Biden emphasized the need to revisit diplomatic talks and possibly a JCPOA redux. Following the loss of President Trump in the 2020 election, Iran and its proxies have taken an aggressive approach within the region and U.S. interests. Most recently setting a hard line with their commitment to restart (or continue) their unfettered nuclear program, and missile attacks against U.S. interests in Erbil, Kurdistan and in Baghdad, Iraq. Listen as the Gold Institute for International Strategy hosts an interactive briefing with our senior fellows about the current situation in Iran.

The Nuclear Impasse: The Geopolitical Stalemate Between the U.S. and Iran
It’s a diplomatic version of Catch-22 being played out in an international scale. The U.S. says Iran must return to the negotiating table – and full compliance – before it lifts sanctions. Tehran says the U.S. needs to lift sanctions before it even thinks about pulling up a chair. America insists Iran concede first. Iran insists the more America procrastinates, the more it stands to lose. Meanwhile, Rouhani only has a few months left in office and with a “hardliner” expected to be elected the next president in June, the future of the deal is uncertain.
So what’s next? Will Joe Biden be able to convince his domestic audience to make concessions after Iran so boldly contravened parts of the agreement? And can Tehran push an agreement through before those who’ve long resisted it, take power? Is the deal worth saving? Does an Iranian policy shift depend on the differences between a so-called “moderate” or “hardliner” elected in June?
Senior Fellow at the Gold Institute for International Strategy Matthew RJ Brodsky joins Senior Fellow at the Atlantic Council Holly Dagres; and author of “America And Iran A History: 1720 To The Present” and Executive Director of the Middle East Center at the University of Pennsylvania John Ghazvinian on TRT World’s The Newsmakers with Alican Ayanlar.
Houthis Attack Saudi Airport Days After Biden Removes Them from Terror List
Why did the Houthis attack Saudi Arabia just days after the Biden administration removed them from the terrorist list? What is the larger regional context in which this took place and what should we make of Saudi Arabia’s response?

Brodsky also addresses Biden’s different approach to the Abraham Accords and discusses the key takeaway from Biden’s decision to not yet call Israeli PM Netanyahu now some three weeks into his administration.
